Why use a control valve?

Processing plants include hundreds or even thousands of control circuits, all networked together to produce products for sale. Each of these control loops is designed to keep some important process variables (such as pressure, flow, liquid level, temperature, etc.) within the required operating range to ensure the quality of the final product. Each of these loops receives and internally creates interference that adversely affects process variables, and the interactions of other loops in the network provide interference that affects process variables.

To reduce the impact of these load disturbances, sensors and transmitters collect information about process variables and their relationship to a desired set point. The controller then processes this information and determines what must be done to return the process variable to where it should be after the load disturbance. After all measurements, comparisons, and calculations are completed, some type of final control element must implement the strategy chosen by the controller.
